During the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589), there lived a beautiful, intelligent princess name Lechang in the State Chen. She and her husband Xu Deyan loved each other dearly. But before long their country was in danger of being invaded by the troops of the Sui Dynasty. Princess Lechang and Xu Deyan had a premonition that their county would be occupied by the invaders1 and they would have to leave the palace and go into exile2. During the chaos3 they might lose touch with each other. They broke a bronze mirror, a symbol of the unity4 of husband and wife into two parts and each of them kept a half. They aGREed that each would take their half of the mirror to the fair during the Lantern Festival, which is on the 15th day of the first Lunar month, in the hope that would meet again. When they were united the two halves would join together. Soon their premonition came true. During the chaos of war, the princess lost touch with her husband was taken to a powerful minister Yang Su's house and was made his mistress5.
At the Lantern Festival the next year, Xu Deyan took his half of the mirror to the fair. He hoped that he could meet his wife. It so happened that a servant was selling the other half of the bronze mirror. Xu Deyan recognized it immediately. He asked the servant about his wife. As he heard about her bitter experience, tears rolled down his cheeks. Xu Deyan wrote a poem on the half of the mirror kept by his wife: "You left me with your broken mirror Now the mirror is back but not you I can no longer see your reflection in the mirror Only the bright moon but not you" .
the servant brought back the inscribed6 half of the mirror to princess Lechang. For days, she could not help sobbing7 because she knew her husband was still alive and that he missed her but they could not meet forever.
the minister, Yang Su, found this out. He was also moved by their true love and realized it was impossible to get Lechang's love. So he sent for Xu Deyan and allowed the husband and wife to reunite.
From that story comes the idiom "A broken mirror joined together".
It is used to suggest the happy reunion of a separated couple.
China has been divided into three kingdoms historically: Wei in the north, Shu in the southwest and Wu in the southeast.
Once Cao Cao from Wei led a 200,000 strong army down to the south to wipe out the kingdoms of Wu and Shu. Therefore, Wu and Shu united to defend his attack. Cao ordered his men to link up the boats by iron chains to form a bridge for the Cao's passing from the north bank of Yangtze River to the south bank. The General Commander of the allied1 army was Zhou Yu. He analyzed2 the situation carefully. Then he got a good idea. He decided3 to attack the enemy with fire. So he began to prepare for the coming battle. Suddenly he thought of the direction of wind. He needed the east wind to blow strongly in order to accomplish his scheme. However, the wind did not come for days. Thus Zhou Yu was worried about it. At that time, he got a note from Zhuge Liang, the military adviser4 of the State of Shu, which reads:
"To fight Cao Cao
Fire will help you win
Everything is ready
Except the east wind"
Quickly he turned to Zhuge Liang for help. Zhuge told him not to worry and there would be an east wind in a couple of days. Two days later, the east wind helped Zhou accomplish his scheme. At last, the allied army won the war.
Later, people use it to say "All is ready except what is crucial5".

Wang Xi-zhi is one of the most famous calligraphers during the Eastern Jin Dynasty of China. When he was very young, he practiced his art every day and never stopped.
Later he absorbed the strong points of all the other schools of calligraphy1, and developed his own unique style of writing. Because of his achievements, he has been honored as one of China's sages2 of calligraphy. One time, Wang Xi-zhi sketched3 in wood for an engraver4 to cut. Then the engraver found the ink had penetrated5 one centimeter into the wood.
"Ru Mu San Fen6" is got from this story, which means the calligraphy is penetrating7.
Now it is often used to describe expressing sharp ideas or profound views.

A man of the state of Zheng wanted to buy a pair of shoes. He measured his foot and put the measurement1 on a chair. When he set out for the market he forgot to bring it along. It was after he had found the pair he wanted that this occurred2 to him.
I forgot the measurement, said he.
He went home to get it but when he returned the market had broken up and he did not get his shoes after all.
Why didn't you try on the shoes with your feet?
He was asked.
I 'd rather trust the measurement than trust myself. (《Hanfeizi》)
